The TAU was created as a support service unit for government within the National Treasury. TAU has evolved from the RDP Office in the Office of the Minister without Portfolio in 1994 to being Project Management Services within the then Department of State Expenditure.

With the merger of the Departments of Finance and State Expenditure in 2001, became a Chief Directorate in National Treasury.

TAU provides strategic and technical management assistance, and leverages public sector knowledge and innovation to improve the quality of spend in government institutions.
