The workshop focused on sharing ideas and learning related to local government support and capacity building. Senior managers from the departments of local government in three provinces to whom TAU provided support - Western Cape, KwaZulu/Natal and the Eastern Cape - participated in the workshop.

The objective of the Workshop was to create an engagement opportunity for the relevant Provincial Directorates who are tasked with providing support to, and capacity building of, Municipalities to share ideas, lessons and good practice. The aim of the first learning network meeting was to discuss general issues related to municipal support and capacity building. The key issues centered on:

      ·         Reviewing existing key performance indicators
      ·         Developing a maturity model
      ·         Measuring capacity support
      ·         Developing the capacity of the capacity builder
      ·         The importance of consistent methodologies around information management
      ·         The local government environmental context
      ·         Monitoring and evaluation of municipal capacity and performance
      ·         Partnerships and stakeholders towards municipal support and capacity building
